Happiness Isn’t External — It’s a Choice You Make Every Day

This is a powerful image that really puts so much into context and it addresses many of the core issues that clients often bring to me.

One of the main reasons for our unhappiness is that we often blame external sources — a person, situation, or thing — for our dissatisfaction. It’s easy to point to a partner’s behavior, a stressful work situation, or unmet desires as the cause of our unhappiness. While external factors can influence how we feel, our emotional state is shaped more by how we respond to these events than by the events themselves.

Blaming others or circumstances can leave us feeling frustrated and helpless, as though we have no control over our happiness. The truth is, happiness is an inside job. While we can’t control what happens to us, we can most definitely control how we respond. The first step toward overcoming dissatisfaction is realizing that we are responsible for creating our own joy.

The key to lasting happiness is shifting from a mindset of blame to one of personal responsibility. We can’t control other people’s behavior or external events, but we can control our emotional responses. This shift from feeling like a victim of our circumstances to taking responsibility for our emotions, is empowering.

Our happiness is our responsibility. It isn’t in someone else's hands; it’s in our own.
